{September 23, 2007}   Burnout reloaded

Some time ago I blogged about burnout. Some of the factors that might cause it are an overwhelming workload and powerlessness to change something important to you. This means that you get emotionally very involved in developing something, and you feel that whatever you might do to achieve it just won’t be enough. I feel a bit powerless and also that whatever more I try to do just won’t improve the situation. Sometimes I have the feelings of being fighting against a big hard wall and that it’s not worth it, and that whatever big effort I might do just won’t be enough.

Of course these feelings will probably fade a bit after sleeping and resting, but they’re sympthoms that are alerting me to slow down a bit and don’t get too emotionally involved in all the stuff I’m doing, and I should better not ignore them, if I want to prevent myself from burning out. It’ll be good to take an emotional rest from all this, but knowing myself I’d probably use the spare energy to get involved in yet more projects.

Hi M,
I just started to read ‘the seven habits of highly effective people’ and it talks about the balance between producing the most you can (like software) and taking care of the one who is doing the producing (you). If this balance is tipped in either direction, one will suffer. So, its good to take a break. I have been reading planet.ubuntu.com for a while and it seems that ubuntu folks seem much more willing to ‘pull back’ from the project for a little while whereas I am not aware of Debian folks doing it (well that is my impression of the limited about of info I have after reading a few debian sources for a number of years). I am awating the next release and hope they put in the release notes and on the cd cover: now with more games! (thanks to the games team)
cheers,
K

Thanks K,

that’s what I plan to do, recover that balance a bit, try to concentrate in me and forget about Debian for a while. Thanks for the advice :)

I hope that you’d get enough rest. I have an idea how you feel, though I am not a developer.

Balance is difficult to achieve, I swear. But we have to keep trying. :)
